The War Z Beta Reports Over 100,000 Closed Beta Sign Ups

The War Z beta has amassed over 100,000 sign ups, according to the developers and IGN. The game itself, a zombie MMO which is heavily inspired by the super popular ARMA 2 zombie mod Day Z, was announced only two weeks ago to mixed reception by gamers. While it is quite obvious that the game is playing off on the success of Day Z, which has single-handedly aided in the progression of ARMA 2 to a top seller on Steam, the developers of The War Z claim that their new MMO zombie FPS is quite different and loaded with a mass of content.

In an interview with two of the lead designers, they explained how they felt The War Z was different than the Day Z mod. Hammerpoint Interactive Senior Game Designer Eric Nordin stated:

The major difference is that DayZ is a fantastic mod for a hardcore military simulation game, so it is all set in that type of environment.

Despite the mass amount of sign ups to The War Z beta, the game is still very much so in its alpha state. Furthermore, no date has even been given for the start of the beta. What is known, however, is that the game is set to launch with a retail price of $30 — a bit pricier than ARMA 2 which was recently the subject of the Steam Summer Sale and could be picked up for a little over 20 bucks.

Whether or not The War Z turns out to be riding the wave of popularity formed by Day Z or an excellent addition to the newly-emerging round of zombie slashers will most likely be revealed at the start of closed beta — an event which may not take place for several months. As with all titles, NDAs can only do so much to stop beta testers who may be labeled whistleblowers, concerned gamers, or perhaps even something more inappropriate and offensive depending on how you view the situation.
