Blacklight Retribution Free to Play FPS Gameplay

You’ve probably heard of of Blacklight: Retribution, the free to play FPS that is now out on Steam. You’ve also probably heard a lot about the game and its economy, but perhaps very little about how it actually plays. I will tell you one thing: the economic model of Blacklight: Retribution really does take away from the game through giving you the option to purchase guns instantly with real cash or spend upwards of 40 hours grinding out a particular weapon.

While it’s true that you can get at least most of the same weapons as someone dishing out $100 on high-tier items, it takes a really long time. Of course the fact of the matter is that it is a free to play FPS, and therefore you’re not necessarily required to do anything you don’t want to, but does that really justify such a system?

Thankfully, however, the concerning cash shop model doesn’t entirely take away from the fun of the game. Blacklight offers up a surprisingly fun way to kill a few hours during your off time or in between other games. And perhaps the most important part for any competitive players: it’s entirely possible to kill someone even 10 or 20 levels higher than you — even if they have purchased gear from the cash shop.

Fairness in Free to Play FPS Cash Shops?

This is thanks in part to the super low TTK, or time to kill. This is a measurement of how quickly someone goes down, a bullet to death ratio of sorts. Blacklight sports a super low TTK, with the possibility of taking someone down in just a couple seconds or less. This makes the game super fast paced, somewhat more fair (when it comes to being able to gun down super spenders with their extra perks and armor, at least), and a change of pace from games like Halo. It really comes down to your personal play style, though.

The game does feel quite ‘boxed in’ at times with only 16 players on somewhat small maps, and it can oftentimes feel somewhat claustrophobic when considering that the ‘tried and true’ method of domination, team death match, and capture the flag are at the core of Blacklight’s gameplay. When it comes down to it, however, Blacklight isn’t out to revolutionize the FPS genre. Instead, it’s a fun game that is free to boot up and start playing right away — even without dropping a wad of cash.

This is a very nice site, I’ve read all three of your current articles and they all seem very professional and informative. I hope to see this site take off, i think that this is the only gaming news site other than RPS that I actually enjoy reading. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks a lot, Mrthalax!

At the core of the site is the idea that if it’s not entertaining and honest then it’s really not worth anything to the reader. Plus, people know when you’re selling them a bunch of garbage in a ‘news’ article.

We hope to be around for a long time and appreciate you checking us out!
