Awesome New Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Mod Supports 600 Players (Video)

Demonstrating the power of community modding, a new fan-made Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod allows up to 600 players to occupy the game’s notably large map. Plainly called ‘Just Cause 2 Multiplayer’, the mod has only just hit beta and is receiving a ton of attention — including 10,000 sign ups on their forum alone.  As you can see from the video above, 600 players can really amount to a massive force, even when talking about a game world that takes several minutes to traverse by jet plane.

Now, hundreds of players on a single server can crank up the GTA-like mayhem via planes, cars, and huge weaponry. The major game addition reminds us that sometimes the best content is actually generated by the users. Games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and The Elder Scrolls series, both with hardcore fan bases, have become shining examples of this. Both of these games were released to majority-wise positive feedback, but many of the elements holding them back have been effectively tackled by a series of modding crews.

With Steam even opening up an entire section of Skyrim mods for free, it’s easy to see that modding is really the future counter to DLC packs and the micro-sale of textures/models. And now Just Cause 2 is joining the conglomerate of mod-enhanced games that actually drive sales.  Originally released back in March of 2010, Just Cause 2′s popularity has recently spiked once more thanks to Steam’s many sales on the game. Just Cause 2 is currently $14.99 on Steam, and was recently discounted during the Steam Summer Sale.

The new addition of this multiplayer mod will certainly help spur some further popularity as well, just as the zombie mod Day Z has somewhat single-handedly skyrocketed ARMA 2 to a consistently top 5 game on Steam. The developers of the the Just Cause 2 Multiplayer mod may want to watch out though, as they might also spawn a highly anticipated MMO from their endeavors. I am of course speaking about The War Z, a new MMO based on (unofficially, at least) Day Z that reported a massive 100,000 closed beta sign ups after announcing the game only 2 weeks ago.

Modding is Good | Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Mod Will Drive Sales

If nothing else, the frequent news of awesome mods should tell developers that by enabling the community (or even offering mods themselves in the case of Day Z for example) to generate new content instead of charging $20 for new DLC actually generates a ton of reveue due to serious interest. I plan on writing a few pieces on how mods can change the entire gaming industry in the near future as well to extrapolate on this. In the meantime, this new mod looks like a lot of fun.

While you can’t sign up for beta just yet, the devs encourage everyone to check out the Just Cause 2 Multiplayer website for updates on when testing will begin.
